A former professional road cyclist who hails from Central Otago has avoided further jail time after pleading guilty to selling ecstasy tablets across Perth.

Alex Malcolm McGregor (28), who attended Dunstan High School in Alexandra but later relocated to Dunedin, pleaded guilty to eight charges in the Western Australia District Court on Thursday, reported Stuff.

He was given an 18-month prison term, part of which was suspended.

As a result of the partially suspended term and time already spent in prison, he walked free from custody.

Stuff reported McGregor resorted to drug use and dealing after his cycling career came to an end following injuries and a doping investigation.

Stuff stated the eight charges McGregor pleaded guilty to last week were five counts of selling MDMA, supplying a prohibited drug, possession of unlawfully obtained cash and possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply.

The court was told McGregor's drug offending occurred between March and July 2017.

He sold several batches of MDMA tablets on numerous occasions. The batches ranged in size from 10 to 100 tablets.

The court heard some of the transactions occurred at a Perth nightclub, a train station and a hardware store car park.

The tablets sold had a purity of between 13% and 19%.

McGregor was arrested by police in Leederville in July last year. When officers searched him they found 100 MDMA tablets, hidden in a cigarette packet.

A search of his home found more MDMA pills and cash from drug dealing.

A Central Otago man, who talked to the Otago Daily Times yesterday but wished to remain anonymous, said McGregor was ``quite a good talent from a young age'' on the cycling scene.

In 2008 McGregor was named in the New Zealand team to the UCI World Road Championships in Cape Town, South Africa.

In 2010, the up-and-coming cyclist, aged 20, was taken to Dunedin Hospital after he injured himself while diving into a swimming pool.

He recovered from his injuries and went on to win numerous events, including the mountain bike section of the Big Easy near Wanaka in 2013.

By the end of that year, McGregor, aged 23, had signed a one-year,semi-professional contract with the Perth-based Satalyst Giant Race Team.
