Landfill report is still weeks away

A report on the legal ownership and resource consent status of a Wanaka landfill is not likely to be released before the end of this month, as local authorities continue to investigate complaints about activities at the Riverbank Rd site.

Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Duncan Field told the Otago Daily Times last month the compliance report by Lakes Environmental staff would be available by March 28.

The report writers have been granted extensions and sought legal advice on the issues.
Mr Field confirmed this week he has the final report and is giving the landfill operators an opportunity to comment before releasing it at the end of this month.

The report investigates alleged breaches of district plan rules and deals not just with the Wanaka Landfill Ltd site but other activities nearby, including Wanaka's recycling centre.

The QLDC is also talking to the Otago Regional Council, as it can also take enforcement action.
