The Bannockburn Indoor Bowls Club is bucking the trend and standing the test of time.

The club celebrated its 60th anniversary on Monday night, when past and present members gathered to mark the occasion.

There was little fanfare, but a lot of laughs and rounds of club pairs, cake and the weekly staple of any club night, gingernuts.

The club was formed in 1961 and bowlers met originally in the Bannockburn Hall.

After the hall was red-stickered, due to earthquake risk, the club moved to Lowburn, where it remains.

The larger Lowburn Hall allows the club to accommodate more weekly games.

Past member Freda Foster said for many years the club been a source of companionship and a ‘‘whole lot of fun’’ for her.

‘‘I’ve always been interested in sport and after we had a family I wanted to get back into it and this was quite good for us,’’ she said.

Secretary-treasurer Janeen Wood said while other indoor bowls clubs were struggling for numbers, the Bannockburn club was growing.

The key to that growth?

‘‘We’re quite a social bunch,’’ she said.
