It was an emotional occasion as 23 new New Zealanders gave their affirmations or oaths at a citizenship ceremony held at the Central Otago District Council building in Alexandra on Friday.

The new citizens came from 12 different countries.

One, a proud Scotsman and hardcore Crusaders fan Kyle Clapperton said his story in New Zealand began long before arrived when he would watch the Crusaders on television as child in Edinburgh.

In November 2014 he arrived in New Zealand with only a backpack, $2000 and an accent that confused every fast food drive-through operator he met.

Christchurch quickly became the heart of his Kiwi adventure, where he used his construction project management degree to help rebuild the city.

Mr Clapperton played a part in building the One New Zealand stadium in Christchurch, which he described as a "full-circle moment".

"To think that I was sitting on the sofa in Edinburgh watching the Crusaders play and now ... walking around the new Crusaders ... changing rooms and it was a surreal experience."

He met his partner Annie in Christchurch where they bonded over their shared interest in the Lord of the Rings.

Mr Clapperton attended the ceremony in a kilt, joking he looked like a Highlander.

"I probably should have said I was a Highlanders fan."

He moved to Central Otago when his partner found a job as a nurse at Dunstan Hospital.

When asked about a shift in allegiance to the Highlanders, he joked "not on record".

The other new citizens included: Danielle and Seth Laughington (Canada), Geling Li (China), Rita Richards (England), Vilisi Bulavou and Marica and Simione Salu (Fiji), Taitusi Kadavaki (Fiji), Blanka Csiky (Hungary), Declan Monahan (Ireland), Tanentoa Teiwaki (Kiribati), Weena Morris (Thailand), Charlotte Kortegast and her two children (United Kingdom), Archie, Ethan and Megan Sieroczuk and Jane Walker (United Kingdom), James Tate-Bell (United Kingdom), Gillian Wilson (United Kingdom), Joanna Corrie (United States).
