A new way forward for council reserve land in Clyde has been approved by the Vincent Community Board.

At its meeting yesterday, the board adopted a new reserve management plan for Clyde, paving the way for better council management of reserves in the town.

Vincent Community Board members Brian Fitzgerald and Russell Garbutt, who are also members of the Clyde Recreational Reserve Committee, saw the plan's adoption as a step in the right direction.

''It provides an excellent plan for the management of the reserves,'' Mr Garbutt said.

''Clyde's turned into a destination; people are coming from far and wide.

''It's important with pressures on expansion that reserves are protected.''

Before the plan, Mr Garbutt said reserve management was much more ad hoc, with the reserves developing at different stages.

Under law, all town reserves had to have a plan but Clyde did not have one, Mr Garbutt said.

Mr Fitzgerald said people were ''surprised'' about the number of reserves in a small town like Clyde - the plan lists 15 of them.

Mr Garbutt said the reserve plan would complement the new 10-year plan developments in Clyde - the new wastewater reticulated pipe system and heritage precinct upgrade.

''It fits together really well with the long-term plan - the reserve plan will help the management of the town.''

The plan would not make way for any significant and immediate change, but some planting and vegetation would be added in reserves, picnic facilities would be developed and there would be upgrades to a playground in Fache St and at Clyde Recreation Reserve between Sunderland and Whitby Sts.
