Organising committee decides not to hold festival next year

Organisers of Ranfurly's annual festival are mulling its future.

Rural Art Deco Maniototo Inc, which organised the Art Deco Festival in the past and this year's Festival in the Park, has decided not to hold an event next year.

Committee deputy chairman Amie Pont said the decision was due to lack of volunteers and wider community support.

The Festival in the Park was held in February this year to replace the previous Art Deco Festival, which had run for 14 years.

''We are really hoping something can happen in 2017, but we need to see what the community wants from it,'' Mrs Pont said.

''We need that larger ownership to keep it fresh and viable.''

She said the small organising committee had ''burned out''.

She was open to exploring other options, including a different location, date, or holding the event every two years.

''Again, it has to be decided by the community,'' she said.

Central Otago District Council councillor for the Maniototo Stu Duncan said it was shame when any festival did not go ahead because there had been ''fantastic'' work done over the years.

''And I don't think they [festival committee] have been recognised for the work they put into it,'' he said.

They had been good festivals and a lot of people have really enjoyed them, he said.

''A little town needs its own thing.''

Maniototo Paint and Hardware shop owner Sheryl Edwards said she enjoyed the festivals, particularly this year's event.

''It was a such a lovely atmosphere ... a beautiful day and lovely setting,'' she said.

However, a resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that while the festivals had been run well in the past, he questioned whether the festival had been run with local businesses in mind.

Businesses did not benefit to the extent they did before the organisers brought in outside mobile food and coffee beverage stalls, he said.
