The role of chief winemaker for 18 Central Otago vineyards was an offer and a challenge former Akarua winemaker Carol Bunn could not refuse.

When she accepted the job in 2004, friends in the industry told her it would be impossible to make award-winning wine as she had previously done, with a small vineyard.

Celebrating five gold, nine silver, and 17 bronze medals for wine Ms Bunn had made under VinPro was that much sweeter after proving the sceptics wrong.

Ms Bunn established VinPro, which makes various wine labels for 18 clients, with managing director Morley Hewitt.

She said the communication among Central Otago's wine industry professionals helped to increase the quality of what was produced throughout the district each vintage.

As well as a strong community of viticulturists in Central Otago, Ms Bunn said her team of staff at VinPro were appropriately recognised in the Bragato awards recently.

"Such a result across the board is a reflection of the dedication and hard work that the VinPro team put into the wines for our clients.

"To receive so many gold, silver, and bronze medals is a real credit to the way our team works together as well as with our clients," she said.

Ms Bunn said although Central Otago made it look easy to achieve medals on wine labels, it was a difficult process which took a lot of hard work, "especially with pinot noir because it's very finicky".

"That's why we are so happy about our medals [from Bragato] . . . we are thrilled with the results," she said.
