Plea to parents after damage at recycling yard

Alexandra police are urging parents to keep an eye on their children after the Central Otago WasteBusters recycling yard was treated like a playground and damaged recently.

Sergeant Ian Kerrisk, of Alexandra, said although damage was minimal, it was upsetting for those who worked at the centre.

"It was more of a nuisance than costly to repair. Locked cabinets were opened and property damaged.

"It's obviously been children who have gone into the yard and we are asking for information from people who saw any children hanging around," he said.

Sgt Kerrisk said there was no fence at the back of WasteBusters but it was a private property and "common sense prevailed".

"This is something which happens on a semi-regular basis and we want to remind people, and want parents to remind children, that it is not a playground," he said.

Cromwell police have arrested an eighth person in relation to an out-of-control flat party in Cairnmuir Cres on August 8.

A 17-year-old Wanaka youth was charged with intentional damage after a concrete block was thrown through the back window of a car.

He appeared before a registrar in the Alexandra District Court last week and was remanded on bail to appear before a judge on August 26.
