Stories and laughter were shared over lunch by about 100 members of the Cromwell and Districts Returned and Services Association for Remembrance Sunday yesterday.

Members aged from their 30s to 90s attended the function, held at the Cromwell Town and Country Club.

Co-organiser Bill Darling, of Cromwell, said the event was about socialising as well as remembering.

"We have the usual two minutes of silence to remember the horrors of war and to celebrate those who fought. We also have lunch, speeches, music, and fellowship," he said.

Pilots, navy officers and soldiers were present at the lunch, some of whom had just returned from serving in places such as the Solomon Islands.

Remembrance Sunday is observed on the second Sunday of November as a universal time of commemoration for all men and woman who died in the service of their country.

It is followed by Armistice Day (also sometimes referred to as Remembrance Day), on November 11, which marks the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War 1.
