Central Otago has only two new councillors after the weekend’s election, but there are a few new faces on the community boards.

With all but special votes counted yesterday, the district had a high voter turnout at 62.06%.

Central Otago District Council electoral officer Kara Leckie said she was "very pleased".

"It obviously means the community is engaged in the process."

In the Alexandra ward, funeral director Lynley Claridge (1150 votes), who previously had the position for nine years ending in 2010, is returning to the council.

She was "really looking forward" to working on important issues, she said.

"One of the best things we can offer is affordable housing."

Sitting councillors from the ward Martin McPherson (1704) and Barrie Wills (1383) retained their seats out of a total of seven candidates.

There was no election in the Earnscleugh-Manuherikia Ward, so new councillor racehorse trainer Victoria Bonham knew of her win beforehand.

Malcolm Topliss was also elected from the ward.

Their names were added to those of  other councillors who ran uncontested: Shirley Calvert, Neil Gillespie and Nigel McKinlay in the Cromwell Ward, Stu Duncan in the Maniototo Ward and Stephen Jeffery in the Teviot Valley Ward.

The Cromwell Community Board is filled with new faces in retired Bannockburn grape-grower Robin Dicey (1730), Goldfields Primary School deputy principal Anna Harrison (1582), Landpro planning manager Werner Murray (1439) and business owner and former primary school teacher Annabel Blaikie (1315).

Sitting member Gordon Stewart, with 1146 votes, was not re-elected.

On the Teviot Valley board, Raymond Gunn (614) and Cliff Parker (435) retained their seats and were joined by personal trainer Sally Feinerman (498) and lawyer John Pritchard (445).

On the Vincent Community Board, Alexandra ward, Brian Fitzgerald (1635) and Claire Goudie (1567) were re-elected and newcomer Alexandra Youth Base team leader Sharleen Stirling-Lindsay (1294) took a seat.

Sitting member Barry Hambleton (1244) was not re-elected.

Sitting  member James Armstrong (990) is joined by former Sport Otago chairman Russell Garbutt (1095) in the Earnscleugh-Manuherikia ward.

There was no election for the Maniototo Community Board, in which members Sue Evans, Robert Hazlett and Sue Umbers are joined by farmer Duncan Helm.
