Police have tracked the source of a photo showing a motorcyclist travelling more than 200kmh to the North Island.
An image showing a motorcycle travelling at 239kmh was posted on a social media page last month in response to a complaint about motorists using their cellphones while driving.
The image was posted by a Queenstown man with the message: ``Stop whinging - it's [using your phone while driving] safe as houses''.
Otago Lakes Central area road policing manager Senior Sergeant Glenn Wilkinson said yesterday police had contacted the man who posted the image and said despite it appearing the photo was taken in Central Otago, it was generated elsewhere.
``We have spoken to the person who posted the photo,'' he said.
``It would appear it wasn't taken in this area. It appears it may have been taken in the North Island.''
The man was ``assisting police with our inquiries'', Snr Sgt Wilkinson said.
Central Otago police were continuing their inquiries into identifying the rider.
``One of the issues around this is it's hard to know when the photo was taken,'' he said.
``We are just finishing off with some inquiries we have to do down here and then it will go to the North Island.
``I can't really say where at the moment.''
Police had the name of another person to speak to in relation to the creation of the image.
