Police have criticised  a man who filmed himself driving at speeds of up to 160kmh and then  posted the footage on social media.

A video posted on Friday last week shows him accelerating his Audi on an Otago road at night as he films his speedometer eventually reaching 160kmh.

It was understood to have been shot near the central Otago town of Roxburgh. The video was one of eight the man has uploaded recently — others also show him accelerating rapidly on two-lane roads after dark,  the headlights of oncoming cars in the other lane  clearly visible.

"The behaviour depicted in these photos shows a complete lack of regard for their own safety and the safety of others," a police spokeswoman said.

"This type of driving behaviour is not funny. It’s extremely reckless and places other road users’ safety at risk."

Using a  cellphone while driving attracts an $80 fine and 20 demerit points "but given these particular circumstances, the fact that the driver is using a phone aggravates the dangerous driving charge", the spokeswoman said.

The man who filmed the videos did not respond to requests for comment.
