The Otago Central Rail Trail users survey has sparked interest throughout the country, and even advisers on the national cycleway have asked for copies.

The results of the survey, commissioned by the Central Otago District Council, were announced recently.

Council business development manager Jonathan Gadd said the 152km trail between Clyde and Middlemarch had become one of the major attractions in the district.

The survey was conducted because of the lack of information about the people who used the trail and the benefits it brought to the area.

"Since the survey was completed, we've had interest at national level, by groups around the country wanting a copy," he said.

Staff from the Ministry of Tourism and Ministry for Economic Development and advisers on the proposed national cycleway had asked for copies, he said.

The Government recently announced $50 million would be allocated over three years to a national cycleway project, linking a series of cycle trails around the country.

Deputy mayor Tony Lepper said the survey, which revealed the trail generated about $7 million for the local economy and the equivalent of 75 full-time jobs each year, had also created interest within Central Otago.

Mr Gadd said the survey would also be useful for businesses along the trail.
