Shingle Creek Cafe and Bar has opened its doors for limited hours over summer, after closing for everything except functions earlier this year.

The cafe was closed by owners Marilyn and Alister Brown in September so the couple could adopt a change of lifestyle.

Stress had been mounting on the owners and staff, and the decision was made to limit the cafe for functions only.

In October, Mrs Brown told the Otago Daily Times it was a bittersweet decision to close the facility, although extended summer hours would be considered.

The cafe is now open between 10am and 4pm Wednesday to Sunday, as well as for private functions and advertised events.

Mrs Brown said she was enjoying opening the facility for cafe hours only, although she was aware evening dining had been popular and was missed by patrons.

"We are just not up to having evening dining at the moment, apart from certain pre-advertised events we hold each month. We are also happy to host pre-arranged functions for families or groups," she said.

The cafe, on State Highway 8 between Alexandra and Roxburgh, has been on the market for the past two years although no buyer had been found.

It is not known how long the cafe will stay open during the daytime.

"It's a lovely spot and generally during the week we get passing traffic stopping for coffee or a bite to eat. The Sunday lunches are always really popular as well," Mrs Brown said.
