Who says history never repeats. Alexandra's Blossom Festival has recruited New Zealand music stars and former festival queens for its anniversary celebrations.

At the 60th Alexandra Blossom Festival, starting in September, a supergroup including Jordan Luck, Peter Urlich and Eddie Rayner will play a set of hits from their former bands The Exponents, Th' Dudes and Split Enz. The eclectic group will include Brett Adams of The Bads, Bryan Bell, formerly of The Dead Flowers, Dave Gent, formerly of The Exponents, and drummer Pat Kuhtze.

Alexandra Blossom Festival event manager Martin McPherson said the band contained three big names in New Zealand music.

‘‘It'll be a significant drawcard. They'll play songs that everyone knows.''He knew some of the members from his time as a music promoter in Christchurch, he said.

‘‘Jordan, Pete and I go back 40 years. I saw Th' Dudes perform on many occasions in Christchurch in the late '70s and early '80s.''

The band will perform on the afternoon of September 24 before the queen is crowned. Dunedin cover band The Foxy Tones will open.

It is hoped between 30 and 40 former festival queens will attend. They will be involved in an official function, the parade and garden tours.

‘‘Out of 59 former queens, three have passed away, and four have disappeared off the face of the planet. The rest have been contacted and invited.''
