Tartan chic show cooler than ever

Holding this year's Teviot Valley Wearable Tartan Art Awards in a coolstore, with the catwalk and stage made of fruit bins, will give a nod to the district's orcharding history.

The change was prompted by the need for a bigger venue after more than 200 tickets to the inaugural show in 2014, staged in the Roxburgh Town Hall, sold out in a few days.

"This meant many locals and visitors missed out on being part of this evening showcase of creativity,'' Teviot Tartan Time Committee member Trudie Marsh said.

"This prompted the small organising committee to think laterally about a venue that could house many more guests whilst maintaining the ‘table and chair' social setting, for a single night event.''

The T&G Pipfruit coolstore by State Highway 8 in Ettrick is the venue for this year's event, on September 10. T&G Pipfruit is the main sponsor and will provide the prize for the overall supreme winner.

The event will be the highlight of the district's annual Tartan Time festival, which celebrates the district's Celtic roots.

Fifty garments were entered in the first show two years ago and the committee hoped to receive just as good a response this time around, Mrs Marsh said.

"We're very excited about our new venue but, of course, the success of the show all depends on the entries we receive.

"Our judges last time around were blown away by the quality of entries.''

Designers have six categories to enter and garments or accessories must feature a third in tartan.

The categories are Lads and Lassies (youth), Sport and Recreation, Business House, Canny Celtic Kiwi Creation, bra design and sporran design.

"We've added the bra section this year. For those people who might be daunted at designing a whole outfit, it'll give them a smaller project to do, if they don't want to design a sporran,'' she said.

The venue would have "an awesome industrial atmosphere'' and could accommodate up to 400 people.

"It'll be an empty shell at the start but I think it'll look stunning when we get it all set up.''

The show would be held in one coolstore, while a neighbouring coolstore would be partitioned off as a dressing room and "backstage'' area, Mrs Marsh said.

"We could've used the town hall again, and it's a great facility but it would be a shame to have so many spectators miss out on seeing the show.''
