Three new justices of the peace were sworn in at Alexandra last month.

The trio — Jorie Reyes, Kurt Verduyn and Walter O’Neil — were sworn in at the Alexandra District Court on December 20 by Judge David Robinson.

All three of the JPs said they were inspired to take up the role to serve their communities.JPs are nominated to the role by their member of parliament who is responsible for ensuring their electorate is adequately serviced by JPs.

JPs’ duties include witnessing signatures on documents, certifying copies of documents and completing declarations, affidavits or affirmations.

Specially trained JPs can also attend court to impose fines, hear bail applications and issue search and some arrest warrants.

All JPs are unpaid volunteers who do not charge for their services.
