After an eventful few months, first responders from the Alexandra and Clyde area had a fun Friday night out thanks to a community effort to show appreciation.

Alexandra Chief Fire Officer Russell Anderson said he was blown away by the generosity of the community which helped organise and pay for the event.

"It’s nice to feel appreciated."

The Alexandra fire service attend 150 callouts a year, which is about three a week.

The fully volunteer force would drop everything to respond to calls.

First responders from the Alexandra and Clyde fire services, Clyde coastguard, rural fire services and St John enjoyed a roast dinner, drinks and live music provided by the band No Filter.

The atmosphere of the Alexandra District Club was lively, with lots of conversation and laughter.

Alexandra District Club president Paul Carden said the idea for the event came from Belinda Annison, who then passed it on to Alexandra District Club manager Chrissy Nesbitt, who bought it to the committee meeting where the idea was well-received.

Mr Carden said the club then went and met with nearly every business in town to ask for donations.

A lot of the people who had donated thought it was about time someone in town did something for the first responders, after all the things they have seen.

Ms Annison said the event was to acknowledge the sacrifices first responders had made to help their community.
