The Otago Goldfields Heritage Trust, an organisation focused on the past, celebrated its own history at the weekend.

About 40 people attended a field day at Galloway and Chatto Creek followed by a dinner near Clyde on Saturday, marking the 25th anniversary of the trust.

A sign with details and a map of gold dredges in the area during the early 1900s will soon be added to this site.

Historian and trust member Rex Johnston, of Cromwell, said there were 176 gold dredges registered in Otago rivers ''at the peak of dredging'' in 1900, many around Alexandra and Clyde.

''Of that number, only about 15 or 16 actually paid any dividends,'' he said.
