Big trucks are a drawcard but best given a wide berth while on a bicycle, Alexandra school pupils heard this week.

Road Safety Week was marked with sessions at the Alexandra bike park with Central Otago District Council road safety adviser Chris Foggin.

Share the Road campaign manager Richard Barter and educator Kelvin Aris were on hand to show people of all ages how to improve their safety on the road.

Alexandra Primary School pupils through to the more mature members of Bumz on Bikez cycle group all experienced the reality of what a truck driver could see from their cab.

Participants were able to climb up into the truck to get a driver’s-eye view of the road and find out how hard it was to see anyone close to them.

Mr Foggin said Fulton Hogan had made a truck available for the two days to show vulnerable cyclists, walkers and horse riders were around heavy vehicles.

In addition, Mr Barter had taken sessions with waste management and food delivery company drivers about being aware of other road users.

"You can’t control what other road users do but you can ask yourself why?

"How you react to them can make your day better or worse," he said.

Mr Foggin had recently taken on the role of CODC road safety adviser. He had a strong background in cycling and working with young people.

Teaching young people to be safe on the roads would eventually lead to better drivers, he said.
