More wild winds on way for South

Just days after the South was lashed by winds which cut power to thousands, MetService is warning that more are on the way.

The forecaster has issued a strong wind warning for Otago and Southland, saying severe northwest gales could gust up to 120kmh in exposed places.

MetService says the winds would hit most of Otago from around 4pm, but could hit the Clutha district and Southland from around 1pm.

A warning has also been issued for the Canterbury high country, and plains near the foothills.

There is also a heavy rain warning for Fiordland.

The wild weather is the result of a front preceded by a strong and moist northwesterly flow moving on to Fiordland tonight

It is expected to weaken as it moves slowly northwards tomorrow morning.

The South is then expected to have a run of high temperatures as a heatwave settles over the country.
