Almost half landslip claims declined

Almost half the 28 Moeraki landslip claims lodged with the Earthquake Commission (EQC) after heavy rainfall in late May 2010 have been declined.

Waitaki District Council assets group manager Neil Jorgensen said in a report prepared for Monday's Waihemo Community Board meeting that the EQC had discretion to decline claims where a notice had been placed on the certificate of title identifying a natural hazard and 13 of the 28 claims had been declined on this basis so far.

Another nine claims were active, two almost settled and four had been withdrawn.

The EQC has started on stormwater and land drainage works in the area affected by the May 2010 event, when more than 300mm of rain fell on the Moeraki peninsula in a week. The objective is to slow the rate of movement of the slip.

Depending on the success, further works may proceed and the Waitaki District Council may contribute financially towards those works.
