Work to restore the Oamaru BMX track to its former glory is under way.
The project is being driven by Oamaru man Leighton Selfe and supported by the Waitaki District Council.
Waitaki District Council recreation manager Erik van der Spek said initial work involved removing weeds and clearing the ground so that the track could be restored.
Local businesses and members of the community had offered to give time and materials to help restore the track, Mr van der Speck said.
''We'd love to hear from anyone wanting to help,'' he said.
Work is expected to take about four months.
After being cleared, the ground will need to settle before extra material is used to reform the track surface.
''People can continue to use the area during this time. However, we ask that people be patient while the work is being done,'' he said.
