A coating of not many colours

A dusting of snow covers the area around State Highway 85, near Pigroot Creek yesterday, one of many high country roads affected by snow and ice around the southern region.

State Highway 8 (Lindis Pass) between Omarama and Tarras was closed for a time, and warnings were in place for SH1 north of Dunedin, SH87 and SH94.

The warnings came as a cold snap moved up the South Island. Crews worked to keep the roads open throughout the day.

Drivers should continue to take extra care when travelling through these areas in case clear skies and frosts make the roads icy.
