Sport Otago is entering the next phase of its coach development workshop series.

After the success of the first two workshops in Oamaru earlier this year, a third will be held next week at the Excelsior Rugby Club.

It will feature Basketball Otago general manager and former Silver Fern Jodi Brown as the guest speaker.

Previous guest speakers have included Highlanders assistant coach Kane Jury, New Zealand Secondary Schools Netball head coach and former Silver Fern Jo Morrison, and former Tongan and Otago rugby player Uili Kolo’ofai.

Sport Otago has held workshops across the region, more than 160 coaches attending phase one and two workshops.

They covered everything from team culture and communication to feedback, coping with pressure and decision-making.

Sport Otago community sport adviser William Hola said the workshops were about giving coaches "a space where they can learn, connect, and feel supported in the work they do".

"I’ve always been passionate about using the platform of sport to transform lives and help people become better people.

"Coaching can change lives. It’s not just about teaching skills for the game — it’s teaching resilience, teamwork, leadership and those qualities spill over into everyday life. Seeing other coaches thrive, that’s what drives me."

He encouraged coaches from any and every sport and all levels of experience to attend.

"We’ve had coaches from netball, basketball, figure skating, athletics, hockey, squash, rugby, snow sports, curling, mountain biking — all learning from each other.

"Whether you’re just starting out or have been coaching for years, whether your sport is in or out of season right now, there’s always something new to learn, and that’s what makes these workshops so exciting." — Allied Media
