Cape to close again for tree harvesting

Cape Wanbrow will close for about another four weeks while more wind-damaged trees are harvested.

The harvesting will start on Monday, although the area will be open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays.

The cape is a popular recreational area for walkers, joggers, mountain bikers and walking dogs off leads.

Waitaki District Council parks officer Mike Kwant anticipated harvesting the remaining trees would take up to four weeks, depending on the weather.

''We appreciate many people enjoy using Cape Wanbrow as a recreational area, so we are attempting to limit the inconvenience caused by the harvesting,'' he said.

This was why contractors had been asked to harvest only on weekdays.

For public safety, people were required to stay out of the area from Monday to Friday and to comply with signposted instructions when visiting on the weekends, especially keeping clear of cordoned-off areas.

Since the first logging operations finished, the council had allowed people on to the cape to harvest firewood for their own use.

The firewood permits proved to be very popular, each available week having being fully booked.

Permits will be available again in September and dates of availability will be advised at that time.
