Security staff spent Thursday night at Beaurepaires in Oamaru after a car driven by a 16-year old Oamaru girl crashed into the building, leaving a gaping hole.

Constable Ruth Perham said the girl, who was on a learner's licence, was travelling too fast and lost control of the Ford Laser station wagon as she turned left into Orwell St from Thames Highway about 9.20pm. The building was extensively damaged.

Beaurepaires manager Jason Ravenwood, who was called out shortly after the crash, said his first concern was whether anyone was hurt. Insurance would cover the damage.

Neither the driver nor the three passengers in the car were injured. The car was not registered and did not have a warrant of fitness.

Const Perham said police were still investigating but alcohol was not a factor.
