Acting Sergeant Blair Corlet, of Oamaru, said the woman was taken to Oamaru Hospital before being airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries, after the crash on State Highway 1, between Waimotu Rd and Currie Rd, about 10.10am.
The woman had been travelling south in the silver Volkswagen when it crossed the centre line, flipped several times and landed in a paddock.
‘‘Members of the public coming in the opposite direction saw the car veer across the road and hit the bank,'' Acting Sgt Corlet said late yesterday.
‘‘It was airborne from the bank and flipped a number of times - it's gone some distance there.''The vehicle came to rest in the paddock along a fenceline, about 100m from the road.
The woman, the car's sole occupant, was trapped in the vehicle and had to be cut free by members of the Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade and Kakanui Rural Fire Force.
Members of the public who were first at the scene rushed to the woman's aid, comforting and supporting her until she was freed from the car and taken to hospital by St John ambulance.
‘‘That was really nice,'' Acting Sgt Corlet said.
Inquiries into the crash were continuing, he said.
