An 18-year-old man has been charged in relation to a single-vehicle crash that killed two Oamaru teenagers.

Kaylem Rayne Webb-Hirst (16) and Michael Shelford Mauheni (17) died when the vehicle in which they were passengers crashed and caught fire at the intersection of TY Duncan and Shortland Rds on June 12 this year.

Detective Sergeant Hannah Booth said the Oamaru man behind the wheel at the time of the crash was arrested in Auckland after a months-long investigation.

He was charged with two counts of aggravated careless driving under the influence causing death under the Land Transport Act.

The man was to appear in the Oamaru District Court today.
