Dropping off waste to cost more

Charges to dispose of rubbish at the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park in Oamaru will rise on September 1 because of increased costs and a cut in funding from the Waitaki District Council.

Park chief executive Marian Shore said yesterday the council increased its landfill charges on July 1, which meant extra cost for the park when disposing of waste.

Initially, the park absorbed the increase and did not increase charges.

The council, also from July 1, reduced funding by $20,000 to the Waitaki Resource Recovery Trust, which runs the park. The council contracts the park to provide recycling and waste management services.

As a result of the higher landfill charges and reduction in funding, the trust had no option but to increase the gate charges for rubbish dropped off at the park.

The new charges are: 65-litre rubbish bag, $4.20; and a cubic metre of rubbish, $68.
