Exercise programme flexes some muscles

A gentle exercise programme being run in Oamaru and Otematata has been so successful it has been joined by another at Kurow.

The Oamaru programme, at the RSA Hall, has been attracting up to 60 people and that at Otematata, at the District Club, up to 25, each depending on weather and other activities on the day.

It is run through Sport Waitaki and its co-ordinator Kate Cartwright said the first day of the Kurow programme at Whalan Lodge had eight people, but she expected that to grow following promotion over the past week.

The gentle exercise programme covers all abilities and includes components of balance, strength, stretching and motor skills. The majority of exercises are completed in a chair and people are urged to work within their own limits.

In Oamaru and Otematata, the number of participants was initially under-estimated.

''I think then popularity of the sessions shows we are catering to the needs of our communities while offering beneficial exercise, as well as a welcoming social occasion,'' she said.

The Otematata and Kurow programmes have been initiated by volunteer Ethel Grey, who previously managed the rest-home in Kurow.

She wanted to help herself and others reduce their risk of a fall.

''Exercise is a great way to build muscle and prevent a fall. A regular programme is also a great way for people to get together and socialise in our smaller communities,'' she said.

Inquiries about the programme can be made to Sport Waitaki in Oamaru.
