Familton spent $3023 on election

Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton spent $3023 on his successful bid to be re-elected in the Waitaki District Council mayoralty election last month.

All candidates have to file financial returns by December 7, with Waitaki electoral officer Debbie Miall listing how much they spent during the election campaign within the limits set by law. If they spent more than $200, they also have to itemise their returns and provide receipts.

The election expense limit for the mayoralty was $20,000 - Mr Familton spent $3023 and Bruce Cawley $184. The other two candidates, Ralph Burrell and former deputy mayor Gary Kircher, have provided initial returns, but statements and receipts are needed before they are official.

In the election for the Oamaru ward, which has an expenses limit of $14,000, five of the 18 candidates have yet to provide returns.

Of the six who were elected to the council, Peter Garvan was the biggest spender with $1182. Hugh Perkins was next with $1050, Jim Hopkins spent $570, while Gus Young listed no expenses. Helen Stead and Sally Hope have yet to file returns.

Of those who were not elected, expenditure was: Scott Elliffe $757, Malcolm McKenzie $316, Ray Henderson $160, Hec Ramsay $55, Barry Monks $50, Greg Smith $8 and Mr Cawley nil. Those yet to file official returns are Nelson O'Brien (who has filed but needs to supply details and receipts), Peter Ellis, Bruce Albiston and Wee Jock Howie. Former councillor Rod Bidois withdrew during the campaign.

In the Corriedale ward (with an expenses limit of $7000), there were five candidates and so far, elected councillor Kevin Malcolm tops spending with $2417. The other elected councillor, Geoff Keeling, has yet to file.

Of the unsuccessful candidates, returns filed so far are: Derek Austin $916, Alistair Mavor $747 and Allan Jones $127.

No elections were needed for the Waihemo and Ahuriri wards, with Craig Dawson and Kathy Dennison elected unopposed.

Six candidates stood for the five seats on the Ahuriri Community Board, with an expenses limit of $3500. Returns so far show expenditure by only one candidate, Graham Sullivan, with $45. Michael Blackstock, Cathy Ferguson and Barry Shepherd listed no expenditure while Calum Reid and Jon Brocas still have to file returns.

With only four candidates nominated for the five seats on the Waihemo Community, an election was also not required.

All candidates in the Oamaru Licensing Trust elections have filed returns.

They are:
- Ward 1 (expenditure limit $14,000): Scott Ridley $624 (not elected), Barry Monks $50, Ali Brosnan and Peter Garvan nil.

- Ward 2 ($3500): Malcolm McKenzie (not elected) $112, Pam Spite nil.
