A 5-year-old girl is dead following a crash between two vehicles on State Highway 1 near Moeraki this afternoon.

The girl was one of five people in a northbound Holden stationwagon that collided head-on with a southbound Ford Ranger ute near the Moeraki Boulders turn-off about 4.50pm.

She died at the scene, Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Southern Police, said.

The four other people in the stationwagon were taken to Dunedin Public Hospital with moderate to serious injuries, Snr Sgt Brown said.

The four people in the ute were taken to Oamaru Hospital with moderate injuries.

The highway remains closed this evening; however, there is a detour in place near the scene for light vehicles only.

Police advise there will be delays.
