Two Invercargill youths were arrested by Oamaru police after they tried to evade being stopped by a patrol car early yesterday morning.
They were seen by police in lower Thames St but, when signalled to stop because of the way the car was being driven, sped off into Itchen St then on to State Highway 1 heading south out of Oamaru.
Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said the vehicle reached speeds of up to 130kmh on the open road before being stopped on SH1, near Woolshed Rd at Alma, without incident.
The driver faces several charges, including failing to stop for police and driving while suspended.
Both youths also face charges of breaching bail, which included a clause that they not associate with each other and not leave Invercargill.
• A person shooting a .22 rifle on Oamaru's Lookout Point and Cape Wanbrow, popular with walkers and near to houses, has police worried.
Sgt Woodbridge said there was the potential for a major accident. Police were told about a man shooting in the area between 5pm and 5.30pm on Saturday, but he was not found when they went there. Investigations are continuing.
• The cause of a car fire in Humber St, Oamaru, spotted by police about 10pm on Saturday, is being investigated by Fire Safety. Police have appealed for information from anyone who may have seen something suspicious around the grey 1991 Nissan Primera about that time.
