Lions mark 40 years of service

Palmerston Lions Club charter members, from left, Colin McFarlane, Murray Holland, Leighton Coutts and "Mac" Service cut the cake at the club's 40th anniversary dinner on Monday night. Watching is Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton.

About 100 people attended the function.

The club has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for community projects in East Otago. The money raised by the Lions club for community causes since 1968 is in the high hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Projects and community service ranging from the construction of the Palmerston Sports hall to the annual "Kelly's canter" run and walk up Puketapu, manure sales and a golf tournament have been undertaken by the club.

A steady membership has been maintained and a second Lions club was formed in the district some years ago.

The Palmerston club has about 34 members, spokesman Ronald Sheat said.

Attracting younger members has been a "bit of a struggle", he said.
