A new mural depicting silhouettes of Oamaru landmarks has become quite the talking point at Short Black Cafe.

Adorning the southern wall of the seating area in Short Black Cafe, the silhouettes of iconic Oamaru buildings are on a bold orange background, with a contrasting earthy tone to depict the area's hills.

Artist, and Short Black barista, Robin Stock has been spending time after work free-hand painting the mural, using only the images in his head of the buildings, since before Christmas.

The mural had been inspired by a New York skyline silhouette that Short Black chef Kelly Ross had presented as an idea for a feature wall.

It had been nice to include the community and spark some interest by using local buildings, such as the Criterion, Oamaru's many churches and the columns of the National Bank as features, Mr Stock said.

He said work on the mural would be ongoing and Short Black customers could expect to see additions in the future.

Mr Stock has painted murals around the world and in New Zealand, notably a mural at Winchester Rural School, the design of which was also featured on a stamp.rebecca.ryan@odt.co.nz
