A North Otago bowling club is kicking off 2023 with a bang.

Oamaru Phoenix Bowling Club will host the Clubs NZ South Island Men’s Lawn Bowls Tournament this weekend.

It will be the second year in a row that the club will host the tournament.

Under the rules of the tournament works, a club can host for only two consecutive years before it moves on to its next home.

This year’s event would be even bigger than last year’s, Oamaru Phoenix Bowling Club secretary Prem Nath said.

"Last year we had 24 entries, and this year we got 26 entries."

Teams from all over the South Island were coming to Oamaru for the event, he said.

With Oamaru being so centrally located, it helped attract teams.

"People come from Timaru and Gore and Invercargill. We are in the centre. So people love to come here."

A majority of the teams that attended last year will be returning, he said.

"Last year was very successful.

"They come to enjoy [Oamaru] and the way we look after them, they do enjoy [the tournament]."

Last year’s event was an all-Oamaru final, Mike Howard, Brett Cairns, Ray Forbes and John Brokenshire claiming the top honour.

The tournament begins on Saturday morning and will continue until the end of Sunday.
