Microsoft selects Oamaru teacher

Two Otago teachers have earned trips to far-flung parts of the world. Deidre Senior, of Oamaru Intermediate, will attend a world innovative teacher conference in Brazil, while Trish Korth, of Warrington School, will wrap up warmly and head south to the Antarctic on a primary teacher fellowship.

Mrs Senior, who is in her mid-30s, returned this week from Malaysia, where she was one of four New Zealand teachers - and the only South Islander - selected to attend the Microsoft Asia Pacific Partners in Learning Innovative Teacher Conference in Kuala Lumpur.

It was announced at a gala function that she had been chosen from the four to attend a world conference in Brazil later this year. She is still to be informed of details of the conference, including the dates.

Yesterday, a delighted Mrs Senior said it was the most stimulating educational conference she had attended.

"For me, Kuala Lumpur was the pinnacle. Just to have been there and to be among the New Zealand contingent was a huge privilege.

"To be selected [for the world conference] was just beyond anything I've ever expected. To be named by Microsoft . . . that you're the most innovative teacher for the year, that's quite daunting," she said.

Her presentation was compiled from work done as a teacher over the past 10 years. Her focus was integration of ICT to enhance learning for children.
