Armed with a stick bearing the heads of 15 decapitated Barbie dolls, Honey Wilson was ready to do battle at the Oamaru Public Gardens on Thursday.

She was part of the cheerleading moonbugs, there to support artist Donna Demente and her fellow moon defenders in their battle against the moon-hating steampunk enthusiasts.

She and her fellow moonbugs - Barbara Chapman, Troye Evans, Jacqui Chaffey and Roz Merridan - were a riot of colour and ingenious costume, although she did say the colander on her head was very uncomfortable.

The challenge had been issued for a "physical and cosmological tournament" at 3pm on Thursday and the battleground was set, near the band rotunda, with Ms Demente's signature faces forming a backdrop.

The Wizard of New Zealand, who swapped his usual black robes for white ones, received a warm welcome.

A small crowd gathered and waited expectantly until Ms Demente declared victory to the moon lovers, due to the lack of any form of opposition.

They then drew in some spectators for a game of badminton, before some steampunk enthusiasts eventually arrived.

Iain Clark said they planned to use science and technology and superior intellect to beat the moon lovers.
