Oamaru Public Library users can now avoid queuing to take out books with the installation of a new checkout machine.
The machine, which was installed last week, is gives borrowers the option of processing their own books in a similar, but less complicated way to supermarket self-checkout machines.
Waitaki district libraries manager Philip van Zijl said the machine would free up staff to help visitors, although the usual personal checkout would continue.
The machine is part of a move to new technology, including e-books, at the library; while retaining traditional services. Borrowers scan their membership bar codes into the machine, then the books they wish to borrow. They have the option of printing out a receipt with the due date and accessing their account.
Mr van Zijl said at this stage there would be one machine at the library.
