Oamaru Intermediate School deputy principal Deidre Senior is off to Malaysia next year as one of four New Zealand teachers selected to attend the Microsoft Asia Pacific Partners in Learning Innovative Teacher Conference.

At the end of last term, Mrs Senior, who is in her mid-30s, was one of 12 teachers - either secondary or primary - selected nationally as a Microsoft Innovative Teacher.

She had to produce a visual display and be judged by two information and communication technology (ICT) educators, Carol Moffatt and Douglas Harre, on an oral presentation at the national ULearn conference in Christchurch recently.

She was one of four teachers, and the only South Islander, to be judged an award winner, bringing her a trophy and an all-expenses-paid trip to Kuala Lumpur in June.

From the four who travel to Kuala Lumpur, one will be chosen to attend a world conference.

Mrs Senior said she had never been in a situation as a teacher where she had been compared to others and it felt "quite daunting".

Her presentation was compiled from work done as a teacher over the past nine years.

Her focus was integration of ICT to enhance learning for children.

The calibre of those attending the conference was very high and it was "overawing" to win an award, she said.

Mrs Senior was delighted there were very receptive teachers at Oamaru Intermediate who were following on from what she had initiated at the school this year.

"It's not just me delivering to the kids. It's actually going wider than that now," she said.
