Old fire flares up

Tree stumps on a Gimmerburn farm that were burnt in August flared up again this week, with the fire spreading to the surrounding paddock.

"Things are very dry in Gimmerburn and there was probably a metre of ash from the stump fire and with the heat in the ground, it flared up again," Ranfurly fire chief James Hazlett said.

The Ranfurly brigade was called to the property late on Tuesday afternoon and about 30sq m of land was burnt, but the fire was well away from any buildings.

"To be honest, things are so dry there isn't much grass left to burn," Mr Hazlett said, adding that sheep droppings had ignited and the wind blew them along the ground.

The fire crew had a 25-minute round trip to get water, and dumped about 7000 litres on the fire, he said.
