One person has died after a single-vehicle crash on Shines Rd, near the intersection of Smillies Rd, Island Cliff, inland from Duntroon yesterday.

Emergency services attended the scene and the crash was reported to police around 9am.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge said the sole male occupant of the vehicle was found dead at the scene.

Sgt Woodbridge said the vehicle was discovered upturned with the dead man inside.

The police are working with Interpol to contact next of kin.

"It’s an overseas national, is all we can say," Sgt Woodbridge said.

Volunteer fire brigades from Duntroon, Kurow and Oamaru attended the scene.

St John Hato Hone also attended the scene.

"The volunteer fireman were amazing ... also [the] ambulance from Oamaru," he said.

A rescue helicopter arrived at 9.35am.

"The rescue helicopter arrived but there was nothing that could be done for that person," Sgt Woodbridge said.

Both entrances to Shines Rd were closed off for a period.

Sgt Woodbridge thanked the public for their patience.

"We had a serious job to do up there — we were doing that for the next of kin and the family and the patience of the public really assists us with that," he said.
