An energy-absorbing tyre barrier installed at the intersection of Oamaru's Orwell and Humber Sts after a drink-driver ploughed into a house last year had its first major test yesterday morning.

Oamaru police are appealing for information from the public after a vehicle crashed into the tyre wall between 2am and 6am.

Acting Sergeant Carl Pedersen said the crash was not reported to police at the time and the driver had left the scene after making a ''pretty good'' impact.

Police yesterday found the remains of an indicator and a broken headlight, which they hoped would help to identify the vehicle involved in the crash.

Acting Sgt Pedersen expected the vehicle to have noticeable damage.

''Somebody will definitely know what's happened,'' he said.

The owners of the house at the intersection where a drink-driver crashed last year were not home at the time of the crash yesterday.

The energy-absorbing tyre barrier was installed last year after the intersection was identified as high risk following the August 2 crash, which was believed to be at least the fourth there.

Anyone with information about the crash can contact Constable Michael White at the Oamaru police station on (03) 433-1400.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
