Waitaki residents on low or fixed incomes are being encouraged to find out if they are eligible for a rates rebate.
Waitaki District Council chief financial officer Paul Hope said there was some concern that many ratepayers believed they were not eligible because of their age, but eligibility criteria was based on income.
''The rate rebate scheme is based on low income and the level of rates people pay,'' Mr Hope said.
''There is a perception that only retired people on fixed incomes are eligible. This is likely to result in other people thinking they are not entitled to a rebate which could, in fact, be incorrect.''
The maximum 2015-16 rate rebate is $610 and, if eligible for a rebate, the amount will be credited to the rate account.
An application form can be downloaded at www.dia.govt.nz/ratesrebates or collected from council offices in Thames St.
Ratepayers can call the Waitaki District Council financial services officer on (03) 433-0300 for more information.
