An Oamaru company's first foray into a national joinery competition has been rewarded with an award.
Firman Joinery entered the Master Joiner Awards with a reception counter it manufactured and then installed at the University of Otago's psychology 3 building late last year.
It won the Waitaki region award, and then the category for the best specialty, at the national awards held last weekend in Te Anau.
Constructed of radiata pine plywood and solid timber, the reception counter was described by the judges as "an outstanding project".
"It can't be difficult to motivate tradespeople to become totally involved and give their all, when projects like this come along," they said.
Firman Joinery owner Gary Firman said the project was a satisfying one for staff, and it was particularly satisfying to win a national award the first time the company had entered.
