School team wins chase

An Amazing Chase through central Oamaru saw a young team from Ardgowan School outwit the rest to win the event.

The 13 teams spent about two hours around central Oamaru from the Oamaru Penguin Colony to the Waitaki Community Gardens completing tasks.

Team Clueless from Ardgowan School, made up of five 12 and 13-year-olds, compiled 900 points, to beat Team Hornets home by just 10 points.

The teams had to locate 27 checkpoints, complete tasks or answer questions, have their maps stamped and return to the finish in Takaro Park.

At one checkpoint, teams had to sort waste into recycling bins, at others they had to hum tunes or identify objects in buckets while blindfolded.

One bucket was full of baked beans.

Spectators tried to put off teams, incorrectly identifying all sorts of things they had to plunge their hands into.

"Yuk, dead cow," one commented, causing the team to hastily pull their hands out.

The fastest teams to correctly complete all tasks won prizes.
