Search stopped: boaties safe

A rescue operation was launched on the Waitaki River yesterday afternoon after a fisherman saw a jet-boat hull floating down the river.

About an hour later, police were informed the occupants of the boat had made it to shore and were safe.

Sergeant Matt Arnold-Kelly said it appeared the engine had stalled and the boat had hit a willow tree near Henstridges Rd, upsteam from Glenavy.

The floating boat was seen about 1.50pm and a boat and helicopter were dispatched to look for the occupants.

Sergeant Arnold-Kelly did not know how many occupants there were or where they came from as he was yet to speak to them.
