Second concept plan more grandiose

A more grandiose plan based on feedback from the community has been produced to redevelop the Omarama Hall into a community complex.

Last August the newly-formed Omarama Residents' Association called a public meeting to discuss the future of the war memorial hall and how to increase its use.

It produced an initial concept plan in March and asked for public feedback.

Chairman Bill Gordon said yesterday that feedback indicated the community wanted more, so a second concept plan had been prepared.

The next step was to have architect and association member Nic Zuppicich prepare working drawings which could be costed so fundraising could start.

The association has been promised $193,000 by the Waitaki District Council from the sale of the Omarama Medical Centre.

Major changes from the March plan included shifting the play group into an extended area behind the main hall, which would also be used as a supper room, and adding a new kitchen, toilets and storage area.

The Plunket group would retain its existing rooms.

In the main hall, the stage would be shifted to the other end and a backstage area created within existing space.

The existing wing to the left of the entrance foyer would be extended.

It would have provisions for a small library - the Omarama School wished to retain the existing community library - a civil defence area, medical room-office-waiting area and a meeting room.

The extension would house a recreation room, which could also be used as a gymnasium with equipment purchased through some form of club membership.

A sliding door between the meeting and recreation rooms would make the space larger for functions.

Fund-raising for the redevelopment is under a separate association committee chaired by Craig Dawson.

Mr Dawson said the $193,000 from the council would provide the foundation to apply for grants from other groups and trusts.

The new concept plans have been distributed within the community for comment.
