Second roundabout proposed

A second roundabout has been proposed for Oamaru.

Last week, a $60,000 rubber roundabout was proposed for the intersection of Wansbeck and Tyne Sts, at the entrance to Oamaru's harbour area, to address increasing traffic numbers.

Yesterday, Waitaki Mayor Gary Kircher took to social media to say a second proposal with ''similar details'' had been added to today's assets committee meeting for the Eden and Reed Sts intersection.

The Eden and Reed Sts intersection was not as busy with visitors, but was the intersection with the highest number of reported crashes in the district.

''It's a solution for both,'' Mr Kircher said. ''There will be slightly different traffic for both, but it's going to be a good solution to both of them.

''Nothing's a cure-all. People drive through red lights and do stupid things. If people drove to the rules and the conditions there'd hardly be any accidents at all, but that's not the reality - and unfortunately for the safety of everyone, we have to work to the lowest common denominator, to a degree. And this should help that. It doesn't eliminate all risk, but it should cut it back from where it is at the moment.''

The Eden and Reed Sts roundabout proposal was already in the works, but the report was not ready when the committee agendas were published last Wednesday, he said.

At present, Oamaru has no roundabouts. The last one was removed in 2009 as traffic lights were installed in Thames St, on State Highway 1.

Since then, the number of vehicles in town had increased.

''The roads have just got busier,'' Mr Kircher said.

''And there's other unintended consequences. You've had traffic lights be put in on Thames St and people avoid that by going the back streets and that's increased the traffic there.''
